Our client is a global business in the security space, supplying access solutions across Europe, the Americas and Oceania. They produce doors with some of the highest foot traffic you will come across, and likely never spared a thought.

They are responsible for the access control of the doors that secure the buildings we move through every day.

BRIEF

Unlocking the data potential of every door

The client developed smart sensor technology to capture data on door usage and performance. They needed a partner to create an easy-to-use interface that would let their customers view, manage and analyse their door networks.

Together we built a platform that translates detailed metrics into insights that improve security and safety, streamlines day-to-day asset maintenance, and gives operational oversight of an entire fleet of doors.






How the platform works

The strength of the platform is the chain that turns a physical door into a live data source, and we designed the interface to sit at the end of it.

A small IoT device is commissioned alongside each door operator and securely transmits telemetry, its cycle counts, states, errors and timings, up to a central cloud data lake. On top of that sits a business-logic layer that applies the context turning raw signal into meaning: what is normal, what is an anomaly, and what pattern precedes a failure.

The result reaches customers through the web application we designed, which works the same in a desktop browser and on a mobile. It was built to run alongside the systems already in place, with no rip-and-replace.

Real-time insight, on and off site

Before this platform, building managers had limited visibility into the systems that kept their doors working. The tool we built aggregates data from an entire fleet into a single window.

A network-level view, with map views that place every door on its site, shows the health of the fleet at a glance, and users drill down from there into any door showing an issue. Managers can see how a door is behaving, how many times it has opened and closed, when and for how long.

That is what makes planned, predictive maintenance possible, instead of reactive, round-the-clock call-outs.

A 24/7 monitor that is always on

Drill into a single door and its story is laid out: cycle patterns, error patterns, current operational state, and the individual alert notifications with their times and durations.

An event-based engine watches the fleet in real time, triaging and escalating errors, blockages and breakdowns as they happen. Customers are notified about specific faults by SMS or email, wherever they are, so a problem surfaces before it becomes a call-out.

The integration runs both ways. As well as reading telemetry, the platform can push actions back to the door, such as a remote lock, and secure access is handled through self-service user management.

Occupancy at a glance

The same connected doors do more than report on themselves. By counting traffic flow at each entry, the platform calculates the total occupancy of a space in real time.

Building managers can understand traffic patterns, manage safe occupancy numbers, and know how many people are in or out at a glance, so they can meet fire and safety requirements without a manual headcount.

For teams on site, a dedicated tablet view shows live occupancy at a glance, so staff can read a space in real time without leaving the floor.

The technology behind it

A cloud-native platform built to scale across a global fleet of doors.

The platform is a serverless cloud architecture with secure authentication and modern API services for both the browser and mobile clients. Near-time telemetry from edge devices is ingested into a central data lake sized for a whole fleet of doors.

A business-logic and middleware layer performs on-the-fly data manipulation against complex rules, turning raw telemetry into normal-versus-anomalous insight.

It integrates both ways with ERP and CRM systems, aggregating customer and hardware data and pushing actions such as a remote lock back to the door. Automated CI/CD pipelines give full, controlled management of the infrastructure behind it.

The same underlying data serves distinct users, the building managers who run a site day to day and the client’s own teams, each with a view suited to what they need.
