AMillionPaths

AMillionPaths is a Tasmanian careers, education, and employment platform built on a simple belief: people learn best from the real, unpolished paths others have actually taken.

Working in partnership with the University of Tasmania, it helps connect learning with where careers genuinely lead.

BRIEF

From product strategy to a working platform

Built on a patent-pending idea, developed by Gil Sawford, a 50-year experienced careers and employment practitioner, AMillionPaths helps people document the real path their career has taken, the twists, the turns and the insight behind each step, then share it with others.

Building that meant a custom web application, invite-only and built to last. We took it from product strategy and research, through detailed design, to a fully engineered first release.

Product strategy before anything was built

AMillionPaths did not come to us as a blank brief. There was already a patent specification and an early prototype to build on. Rather than treat that as a finished plan, we started with how people think about their own careers. Through personas and journey mapping we worked out what would make someone want to document their path, and how to guide them through it without it feeling like filling in a form.

But the deeper work was in the questions themselves. In close collaboration with the client, we ran research and development into what the platform should ask a contributor, and how to ask it. The aim was not simply to capture a career, but to draw out the reflection and detail that make a path genuinely useful to others: the insight that future members will value as they explore real journeys and make connections in later releases. Getting those questions right is what turns a documented path into something worth learning from.

From wireframes to a high-fidelity prototype, we tested the core product flows with real users and refined them before any production code was written. Getting the experience right while it is still cheap to change is what protects a startup’s investment.

From a proven concept to a build-ready design

With the direction validated, we moved into detailed design: clear requirements, a considered data model and system architecture, and a high-fidelity prototype the team could align on before any production code was written.

Just as important was deciding what not to build yet. We scoped a focused first release AMillionPaths could take to market, with a foundation ready for the phases to come.

The career path builder

The platform guides each person through building their career as a series of events on a timeline: the jobs, the study and the experiences that shaped them. For every step, they capture the insight behind it, what they learned, who influenced them, and how one event led to the next. That focus on the insight, not just the job title, is what sets AMillionPaths apart from a CV or a LinkedIn profile.

The payoff is the visualisation. Rather than a flat list, a person’s journey animates into a path they can see, share and be proud of. Turning a career into a story is a design problem as much as an engineering one, and getting that moment right took careful interaction design.

The platform was the hard part, the thing that actually had to work. Conduct took our vision and turned it into a real product, defining what to build first, then designing and engineering it properly. They were a genuine partner from the strategy through to release, and we always felt the product was in safe hands. For any founder trying to take an ambitious idea and make it real, this is the team you want building it. Gil Sawford Founder, AMillionPaths

Engineered on Azure, built to scale

We built the platform on Azure as a set of cloud services, each doing one job well. The front end is a Blazor WebAssembly single-page application; the back end runs on Azure Functions in .NET 9, with Azure SQL and Entity Framework as the source of truth. It is responsive across desktop, tablet and mobile, and styled with Tailwind CSS.

A startup’s platform has to run lean today and scale tomorrow, so we designed for both. The serverless back end and statically delivered front end mean AMillionPaths carries little fixed cost at launch and scales automatically as more people join, with no servers to provision. Each part of the system, sign-in, data, email and AI, is a separate service with a clear boundary, so any one can grow or be replaced without disturbing the rest.

Because it was built to extend across regions, AMillionPaths can move from a controlled launch to a wider audience, and in time beyond Australia, on the same foundation rather than a rebuild. It is a production-grade product that a small team can run without a heavy operational load.

Identity and privacy, considered from the start

AMillionPaths is invite-only by design, seeded through trusted personal introductions rather than open sign-up. New members arrive through the AMillionPaths website, which we also designed and built, and sign in on Azure Entra External ID, registering with an email or through Google, Apple or Meta. Identity is handled to a standard a startup could not easily build alone.

Privacy shaped the product. Nothing about a member is public by default, and when someone chooses to share their journey, the link stays non-indexable and non-searchable. Members stay in control: they can delete their account, and their personal information with it. These were design decisions, not afterthoughts.

AI that removes ambiguity

Real career stories are messy. One person’s project lead is another’s delivery manager, and free text alone cannot be compared or understood at scale. As people build their profile, we use Azure OpenAI to interpret the job titles they enter, clarify the ambiguous ones, and map them to a clean, standard set of industries based on the Australian Government’s Jobs and Skills industry list.

This is practical AI, aimed at data quality rather than novelty. It quietly turns messy, free-text input into structured, comparable data as people go, which makes the platform genuinely useful today and lays the groundwork for the richer career visualisation AMillionPaths is building towards.

AMillionPaths using AI to clarify an ambiguous job title
As the person responsible for the technology, I cared about how it was built, not just how it looked. Conduct made considered architecture decisions, built cleanly in .NET and Blazor on Azure, and used AI where it genuinely added value rather than for show. The result is a platform we can trust, maintain and grow. Their engineering is the real thing. Adam Nordinson Chief Technology Officer, AMillionPaths

Innovation that qualifies

The work here involved genuine technical innovation, the kind that meets the criteria for the R&D Tax Incentive. Because we were involved from the start, the project was well documented as the work happened, and that record helped support the claim. We were glad to assist their R&D tax firm with the documentation behind the submission.

A live first release, ready to grow

The first release is live. People can be invited in, create an account, build their career journey and share it, all on a platform built to grow with them. AMillionPaths is now in the hands of its first members, and is being introduced to a wider audience over time.

The foundation is the real result here: a well-built platform, with identity and privacy handled properly and with structured data at its core, ready for the next phases of the product.
